ATTORNEY WORK CENTER

THIRD STREET COURTHOUSE

Lawyers practicing at the Third Street Courthouse in Geneva now have available a great new resource: the Attorney Work Center.  The AWC is a result of a cooperative effort between the Kane County Bar Association and the Judiciary under the leadership of KCBA president Bob Britz, Chief Judge Don Hudson and Civil Division Presiding Judge Mike Colwell.  Equally important have been the contributions of time, money and furnishings made by courthouse and county personnel and KCBA members and staff.

The AWC is located on the first floor of the south wing in room 140.  It consists of a large meeting/work room equipped with a conference table and chairs, a couch, bookshelves, a desktop computer, an all in one printer/scanner/copier/fax and wireless internet access.  It also has a smaller conference room for depositions, statements under oath and citation examinations.  This space can accommodate a deposition involving 4-6 people.

The desktop computer has free internet access through a moderate speed DSL.  The word processing program is Word and the email program is Outlook Express.  The email address for the computer is awc@kanecountybar.org.  A modem with several outlets is available for laptops without a wireless card.

There are several guidelines to follow in using the AWC:

1. The facility is open during normal courthouse hours of Monday - Friday from 8:30 to 4:30 p.m.  It will be closed on weekends and court holidays.

2. The large room in the AWC is for attorneys only.  It is not to be used for client meetings or depositions.

3. The small room is primarily for depositions, statements under oath and citation examinations.  That use has priority when it has been scheduled through Su Willey in the administrative office.

4. To ensure availability and to avoid conflicts, all depositions and sworn statements must be scheduled with Su Willey in the administrative office on the 3rd floor.  Her number is 232-3441.

5. The courtroom adjacent to the AWC is used for bankruptcy court several days each month.  Please keep the door to the AWC closed during court sessions.

6. All users are responsible for cleaning up after themselves.  Throw all paper, cups, cans and bottles in the wastebasket.

7. Donation envelopes are located in the AWC to collect money for routine maintenance such as the purchase of paper and ink cartridges for the printer/copier/fax.  If you use the facility, please help support it.

The new facility provides a quiet place for attorneys to meet and work.  It also provides a neutral place to conduct small depositions and other sworn statements.  A special thank you is due to Judge Hudson and Judge Colwell for making this space available and to Mark Meyer for coordinating the transformation.  We hope attorneys make use of the facility and that it helps you serve clients more efficiently and effectively.
